What Is a Dimpled Chin?

The term dimpled chin is used to describe skin that has developed a pitted appearance with numerous small dimples across the chin. Many people compare the look of this skin to that of an orange peel as it has a similar appearance. Those individuals with a dimpled chin may be unhappy with their appearance and long for smoother skin, as the dimples of the chin can’t easily be covered with makeup and other cosmetic products. Thankfully, there are now non-surgical cosmetic treatments that can help minimize the appearance of these dimples.

What Causes Dimples in the Chin?

A dimpled or pitted chin is often caused by a hyperactive muscle in the area that contracts too much. The mentalis muscle is located in the chin and may become overactive for many different reasons. This means it contracts even when it is not necessary. Many people may be unaware that they are constantly contracting this muscle as they may subconsciously do it while concentrating or focusing on a task. When this muscle is overactive, it is continuously stretching the skin, which results in a dimpled appearance. The only way to stop the formation of these dimples is to relax the mentalis muscle.

Treatments for a Dimpled Chin

If you are concerned about the appearance of your dimpled chin, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to address it. Some people wrongly assume that it is just the texture of their skin and there is nothing they can do to smooth it out. But the truth is, there are treatment options for this condition. At Uptown Medical Aesthetics, we will likely suggest Botox® to help you combat this problem. Our team will help you better understand how this treatment works and answer any questions you have about it.

How Botox® Smooths a Dimpled Chin

Botox® is the best treatment option for a dimpled chin as it directly addresses the muscle that is causing the issue.  The appearance of dimples across the chin occurs because the muscle underneath is contracting too much. To stop the appearance of the dimples, you must stop the contraction of the muscle, which is precisely what Botox® does. The treatment uses a purified protein and injects it directly into the affected muscle. The protein works to block the signal from the nerve to the muscle that tells the muscle to contract, which essentially freezes the muscle and makes it impossible for it to contract. This relaxes the muscles and softens the skin, helping the dimpled appearance disappear.

What to Expect During Botox Treatment

Botox® is a relatively simple treatment that is completed right here at our Northglenn, CO clinic. The process is so quick, it can often be completed in a matter of minutes and requires very minimal to no downtime, which means you can return to daily activities right away. The treatment will start with your provider cleaning the area to prepare for the injection. They may also mark the area where the injection should be inserted to ensure precise placement of the Botox®. Your provider will then inject the Botox® and immediately apply pressure to the area. While you may feel some discomfort, it is often very brief. Immediately following your treatment, you may experience temporary soreness, redness, or bruising in the area, but this should fade quickly. While some people notice a difference in their skin rather quickly, it can take up to four to seven days for visible results to begin to appear, with full results noticeable in four weeks or more.
